Dear Lovers of the Mesa,

Each year, just like in the old times, a community or village prepares for the annual sacred dances and stories to be told, and invites people from all around to join in the ceremonies and celebrations. Mesa Life Sacred Fire Community invites you to come together this spring to remember this holy place called Tumbeappah Sooparter Kahn Kaib by the old ones, or Grand Mesa in more recent times, to retell the ancient story of how it was created.

Through the story we are reminded of the spirits of the lands’ role of making space for all the creatures, including humans, to live here and how we can pray and receive help from the sacred mountain. The story teaches us about the time-before-time when the land was formed, how the sky took its place above the mountain, how the sun began to move across the sky and the animals had room to live.

This is a participatory ceremony, where we wear regalia to make the story of creation come alive. We have costumes or you may bring your own. Children are welcome to participate.
